In support of its emergency planning and crisis management preparation, Interconnector engaged Steelhenge to deliver its media and crisis communications training for senior management.
Recognising the importance of effective communications in the response to an emergency or crisis, the aim of the training was to prepare the delegates to communicate effectively with the general public and stakeholders using both conventional and social media.
The conventional media training comprised two parts; a theory session followed by a practical session, based on a relevant and developing scenario. Participants were put in front of the cameras in different interview situations to put into practise the techniques that that had been covered in the theory sessions.
This training was supplemented by additional packages to provide Interconnector with a developed understanding of social media, how it works and, most critically, how it has affected crises in recent years. This was conducted with the specific aim of supporting Interconnector’s strategic decision making on how they may or may not engage with social media in the future.
The training packages were extremely well received such that they were rolled out to a much wider number of staff with crisis management roles within Interconnector. Delegates commented that they felt much better prepared to face the media should they be called upon to do so and also have a much better understanding of social media and how they might use it.
