BS25999 and the BCI Good Practice Guidelines
Steelhenge ensures that all work conducted for clients complies with the British Standard in Business Continuity Management, BS 25999 and the Business Continuity Institute’s (BCI) Good Practice Guidelines.
We ourselves are certified to BS25999. This means that not only do we understand the Standard and certification process in detail but also that our customers may be confident in our own continuity readiness as a supplier.
BS25999 establishes the process, principles and terminology of business continuity management (BCM). The purpose of this Standard is to provide a basis for understanding, developing and implementing business continuity within an organisation and to provide confidence in the organisation’s dealings with customers and other organisations. It also enables the organisation to measure its BCM capability in a consistent and recognised manner.
BS 25999 is published by the British Standards Institute. It comprises two parts: | What is BS 25999? | | - Part 1: The Code of Practice
This provides BCM best practice recommendations. It establishes the process, principles and terminology of business continuity management, providing a basis for understanding, developing and implementing business continuity within an organisation and to provide confidence in business-to-business and business-to-customer dealings. - Part 2: The Specification
This details the requirements for a Business Continuity Management System (BCMS) based on BCM best practice and is used as the basis for the certification process.

The requirements specified in BS 25999-2 are generic and intended to be applicable to all organisations (or parts thereof), regardless of type, size and nature of business. The extent of application of these requirements depends on the organisation's operating environment and complexity.
The BCI’s Good Practice Guidelines follow the structure of BS25999-1 and can be viewed as an implementation guide and definitive text for those practitioners wishing to understand BCM principles and practices in a more comprehensive manner. However, for certification, BS25999-2 should be the reference document for the comprehensive set of requirements.
